Instructional purpose

Title: Five Components of Physical Fitness

Goal:

The central focus of this learning segment is on understanding the five components of fitness and using this understanding to plan weight room workouts. The learning goals for students are: (1) identify and define the five components; (2) set goals for your performance in this unit, (3) determine whether you met your goals and reflect, why or why not?

Content Standards:

PEC Standard 1.10: Analyze situations and determine appropriate strategies for improved performance in aquatic, rhythms/dance, and individual and dual activities.
PEC standard 2.2: Participate in enjoyable and challenging physical activities that develop and maintain the five components of physical fitness.
PEC Standard 3.5: Develop personal goals to improve one’s performance in physical activities.

Assessment:

I will use a rubric to assess the student's rubric design. I will present this rubric to the students before giving the assignment. My rubric will assess students on whether the student's rubric accurately addresses his ability to meet the first learning goal.

1. Basic: student's rubric addresses students ability to identify and define 1-2 components of fitness; proficient: student's rubric addresses his/her ability to identify and define 3-4 components of fitness; advanced: student's rubric addresses his/her ability to identify and define all 5 components

In addition, I will review the student's paragraphs. This assignment will simply receive a check mark for completion as I do not assign grades to reflections in my PE classes.

Review the learning goals for the unit
Based on these goals, design a rubric on rubistar to assess your personal performance in meeting the goals
Write a one to three paragraph reflection on why you did or did not meet your goals

Rubric:
Basic: student submits 1 video; proficient: student submits 2 videos, advanced: student submits 3 videos
Basic: only one of five components addressed via video, Proficient: 2-3 components addressed; advanced, 4-5 components addressed
Basic: paragraph contains minimal description of the video and little or no academic language, Proficient: para contains sufficient description and some academic language, Advanced: paragraph contains in-depth description and uses academic language throughout

Instructional Activities and Resources (learning objects)

Locate three videos on youtube.com which show a person performing an activity which address at least one of the five components of fitness.
Try to find videos which address different components. Ideally, your three videos will document performances of at least 4 of the 5 components.
Write a paragraph on each video describing which components is being performed. Comment on the performance using the vocabulary we have learned in this lesson.
